  • 2007 Rep Venture Updates!

In July ’07 I went to my first Rep training. The vision and the work they were doing aligned so much with what was in my heart that I knew I needed to join the Fall ’07 Venture! Thanks for accompanying me as I trained and was sent to Johannesburg, South Africa, last year. What I experienced there cemented in my heart the vision for societal transformation through reaching all domains of society with the love and power of God. “Repurposing Business – Transforming Society”! (www.repurposing.biz) Venture updates are available, just ask me.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  • Priorities

From late ’07 to early ’08, a class at Freedom went through John Maxwell’s 21 Laws of Leadership—an excellent book. Three priorities jumped out for me and have been an anchor for me since then :)

    1) To live in God’s presence as a beloved child. I learned at Bethel that His presence is all I need! I get to trust Him like a child and live my life at His feet.

    2) To walk in loving relationships with people, seeing others and myself as God does. I get to be for others what love requires of me, and bring all of me into each relationship.

    3) Walk out a unique revelation of God in partnership with Him. Another thing I learned at Bethel is that even as I seek God for His purposes and dreams and desires, He is also interested in the dreams and desires He’s placed in my heart—wow!

And in this order of importance, (1), (2), (3). Ever since my trip to Antioch and IHOP in ’06, I’m anchored on the truth that the one thing that matters most, the one thing that roots my identity, is love—being loved by God and loving Him back. Nice and simple! As I learned then… KISS—Keep It Simple, Spencer!

  • More about Bethel's Worship School

I had an AMAZING time at Bethel this summer! I learned too much, and their SOZO ministry was also life-changing! Since Bethel, I’ve filled in on the worship team at Freedom a few times, which has been fun. Leading worship at God Restores continues to be a fantastic experience. GR is definitely the place where I’ve grown in worship the most this past year.

I’ve started getting more significant bits of songs, and I’m taking time to work on some of them. Songwriting is hard work. It’s been amazing; and to think it all started with a prophetic word in Oct ’05, when I had no inclination to be leading worship! If you're thinking of going to Bethel... go! :)

  • More about my church

July ’07 was a “alignment” month for me. On my 2nd or 3rd visit to Freedom Worship Center, the senior pastor shared the church’s vision. There was such alignment that I sensed I needed to be at Freedom (www.freedomwc.org).

We had a joint project in May ’08 with the City of San Jose called Project Homeless Connect, where we linked people without homes and those at risk of homelessness with resources and social services. The foot-washing stations were some of my most touching moments. The partnership was led by people at Freedom who had come out of homelessness themselves.

The experience put me back in touch with something that has been close to my heart all the way through high school and college—the poor. Sometimes, living in the suburbs for 7 years now, going back to school, or mobilizing for nations far away etc., I forget about the poor right here. It was a significant moment of remembering my purpose to reach society at multiple levels, high and low, and see transformation all the way through.

  • Family

God Restores Ministries has been a great family since I joined the team in Jan ’07 (www.godrestoresministries.com). We’re going into a season of seeking God without any agenda, longing for revival!

In addition to weekly services on Monday nights, we’ve put on several workshops this year, which have been a blast! March: Vision-casting, April: Hearing God’s voice, June: Worship, July: Spiritual warfare, and in October we’re coming full circle to another vision-casting. I’m excited!

It was at the last vision-casting in March that I set out my vision to love and serve God as a worshiper, coach and consultant. Earlier that day I had the most significant conversation with my dad. (Thanks Bart, Clint, and others who encouraged me with their own stories!) We talked openly and honestly about our relationship—the past, and our hopes and desires for the future. We were both teary-eyed for the whole hour-and-a-half at Starbucks! We’ve continued to have good coffee hang-outs since then. Praise God :)
